Host Families

Our Approach to Host Families

We understand that a welcoming, safe, and supportive home environment is essential for international students. That’s why we invest time and care in selecting host families who are not only kind and responsible but also sensitive to the cultural and emotional needs of young people far from home.

Selection Process

  • Comprehensive interviews and home visits for all prospective host families

  • Enhanced DBS checks for all adults in the household

  • Ongoing support to ensure high standards of care

  • Regular feedback from students and families to monitor quality

Cultural Awareness

  • Host families are briefed on cultural differences and sensitivities

  • We foster open communication to ensure every student feels comfortable and understood

Accreditation & Safeguarding

Commitment to Best Practice
Shire Guardians is committed to the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection. We are working toward full accreditation with AEGIS, the leading body for guardianship organisations in the UK. Our policies and procedures are aligned with AEGIS guidelines, including:

    •    Safer recruitment and vetting of staff and host families
    •    Ongoing safeguarding and child protection training
    •    Regular review and improvement of our safeguarding policies
    •    Transparent communication with schools, parents, and students regarding wellbeing and safety

Why AEGIS Accreditation Matters
AEGIS accreditation is recognised as the gold standard for guardianship organisations in the UK. It assures parents and schools that an organisation meets strict criteria for safety, quality, and accountability. We are proud to be working toward this standard and already implement many of its best practices.
