Frequently Asked Questions
What is an educational guardian?
An educational guardian is a UK-based adult appointed by a student’s parents to provide care and support while the student is studying in the UK. They act as a bridge between the school, the student, and their family, especially when parents are overseas.
Why do international students need one?
In the UK, it is a requirement of your visa and your boarding school that every child from overseas must have an appointed guardian resident in the UK while studying at the school. This ensures there is someone nearby to take care of them, assist in emergencies, attend school meetings, and provide a safe and supportive environment during holidays and weekends away from school.
What services are included?
Our guardianship package typically includes:
• 24/7 emergency support
• Regular check-ins with students
• Liaison with schools and parents
• Arrangement of host family accommodation during breaks
• Assistance with travel and logistics
• Attendance at key school events and meetings if required

How are host families vetted and selected?
All host families are carefully selected through an interview and home visit process. We carry out Enhanced DBS checks and provide training and ongoing support to ensure families can offer a safe, comfortable, and culturally aware environment.
What happens in case of an emergency?
We provide 24/7 emergency support. In the event of an emergency, we coordinate with the school and medical professionals as needed and keep parents informed throughout the process.
How do you communicate with parents and students?
We maintain regular communication through emails, phone calls, and messaging apps like WhatsApp. Updates are provided after school visits, during travel, or if any concerns arise. We aim to communicate clearly, promptly, and in the way that suits each family best.
What measures are in place for student wellbeing?
Student well-being is central to our approach. We stay in close contact with each student, check in regularly, and work collaboratively with schools and host families. Any issues are followed up with care and discretion.
Is Shire Guardians an accredited organisation?
We are working toward accreditation with AEGIS (The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students), the recognised body for quality assurance in UK guardianship. In the meantime, we follow their guidelines and best practices.
What makes Shire Guardians different to other guardians?
Shire Guardians is a small, family-run service based in Shropshire, and we pride ourselves on getting to know each student and their family personally. Our local knowledge of the area and strong relationships with nearby schools allow us to offer responsive, hands-on support. By working with a limited number of students, we ensure each one receives individual attention and consistent care from someone they know and trust.
How do I register?
Simply contact us via our website or email. We’ll arrange an initial consultation to understand your needs and explain how we work. If you’re happy to proceed, we’ll guide you through the registration process and put everything in place before your child arrives.
